Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns sat out Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers due to a thumb sprain, but reports suggest that he may be dealing with a more serious underlying issue.

Sources confirm to SNY’s Ian Begley that Towns has a bone chip in his thumb but that is not why he was kept from Wednesday’s game. The expectation is that Towns will be back on the floor once the thumb sprain heals and is considered day-to-day.

Towns injured his thumb in Monday’s loss to the Detroit Pistons after he slammed his hand on the backboard during a first-half drive to the basket.

In his first season with the Knicks, Towns has become the team’s most complete player. Across 38 games this season, Towns is second on the team averaging 25.4 points on 55 percent shooting, while leading the team with 13.9 rebounds and third with 3.3 assists per game.

Entering Wednesday, Towns also leads the Knicks with 44.9 percent three-point shooting.

After their game with Philadelphia, the Knicks will play two games over their next five days. First, they’ll host Towns’ former team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, on Friday before welcoming the Atlanta Hawks for a matinee tip on Monday.

The Knicks (26-15) hold onto the third seed in the Eastern Conference.
