New Delhi: India’s experienced batter KL Rahul had a disappointing outing as an opener in the Adelaide Test against Australia. Despite showing promise with the bat in Perth, Rahul failed to make a significant impact in the second Test, managing to score only 44 runs. In the first innings of the day-night match, he scored 37 runs off 64 balls, including 4 fours. His performance in the second innings on Saturday was even more underwhelming, with Rahul only managing to score 7 runs off 10 balls, which included a four. India, after scoring 180 runs in their first innings, were unable to contain Australia, who went on to score 357 runs. Travis Head stole the show on the second day with a sensational century (140), while Marnus Labuschagne also contributed with a solid half-century (64).

KL Rahul caught in Pat Cummins’ trap:
After falling behind by 157 runs, India’s openers Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal were expected to give a strong start. However, Rahul could not overcome the challenge of captain Pat Cummins. Cummins trapped Rahul in his trap on the fifth ball of the fourth over. He tried to play a pull shot on a back of length ball but was deceived. The ball went into the hands of wicketkeeper Alex Carey after hitting the gloves. On the other hand, young Yashasvi scored 24 runs in 31 balls with 4 fours. He looked in good touch but fell prey to Scott Boland in the ninth over. He also gave a catch to Carey.

KL Rahul did not keep the honour of sacrifice:
Rahul played innings of 26 and 77 runs after coming in as an opener in Perth. He played as an opener in the absence of captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit did not play in the first Test due to the birth of a child. When Rahul returned to Perth after a bad form, discussions started about whether he would open in Adelaide as well or come at number 6 like before when Rohit returned. In such a situation, Rohit decided to make a ‘sacrifice’. He made it clear before the Adelaide Test that Rahul would open in the second Test as well and he would play in the middle order. But Rahul did not keep the ‘honour of sacrifice’ of Rohit.

This pattern of KL Rahul increased the tension:
Rahul had a strong partnership of 201 runs for the first wicket with Yashasvi (161 off 297 balls) in Perth, which Rohit liked very much. Rohit had said before the second Test, “We want results, we want to be successful. Both these batsmen performed brilliantly in the first Test. I was watching their batting at home. It was great to see Rahul batting. He deserves to play as an opener.” Rohit came out to play at number six in Adelaide. Rahul’s pattern of getting out has increased the tension of Team India. He has returned to the pavilion by giving a catch to the wicketkeeper five times out of the last 6 times in the Test. Now everyone will be watching what decision the Indian captain will take regarding Rahul in the third Test.
